Diesel Engine Rebuild & Repair Service — UK Workshop
When your existing engine is worth rebuilding — full diesel engine rebuild service in our UK workshop. Stripped, measured, rebuilt to OEM tolerance, and returned with a 12-month warranty.
Engine rebuild is not always the obvious choice — but for the right engine in the right application, it is the most cost-effective path to a reliable, warranted unit. When your existing engine has sentimental or specialist value, when it's a heritage or rare unit that can't easily be sourced reconditioned, or when you need to maintain the original engine in the asset, we offer a full in-workshop rebuild service.
Our diesel engine rebuild service covers a complete stripdown, component assessment, precision machining where required, and full reassembly to OEM specification. We provide a fixed price before any work starts, a target return date, and a 12-month parts and labour warranty on the completed rebuild.
A Rebuild Done Properly Starts With a Complete Stripdown
We don't short-circuit the rebuild process. Every engine we rebuild is completely stripped — every bolt, every bracket, every gasket removed. Once stripped, every component is cleaned, measured, and assessed against manufacturer tolerance data. Nothing is reassembled on hope.
Components within tolerance are refitted. Components outside tolerance are replaced with quality parts — not the cheapest available. The rebuilt engine is assembled, pressure tested, and run before return. You'll receive a detailed report of the work carried out.
- Complete engine stripdown before any assessment
- Precision measurement against OEM tolerances
- Machining services — boring, honing, grinding as required
- Pressure test and run before return to customer

Engine Repair vs Full Rebuild — What's Right for Your Engine?
Not every engine needs a full rebuild. Some diesel engines present with a specific fault — a failed head gasket, a cracked cylinder head, a damaged oil pump — where targeted repair is the economical solution. We carry out targeted engine repair as well as full rebuilds, and we'll recommend the approach that makes most financial sense for your engine and application.
- Cylinder head replacement or repair (crack testing, valve grinding)
- Piston and ring replacement (bore assessment and re-ring)
- Main and big-end bearing replacement
- Crankshaft grinding or replacement
- Oil pump replacement and assessment
- Timing system components — chains, tensioners, sprockets
- Full gasket set replacement and sealing restoration

Fixed Quote Before We Touch the Engine
The thing customers hate most about workshop repair is price creep — the quote that grows once the engine is stripped. We work differently. After initial assessment, we provide a full fixed price covering all parts and labour for the rebuild. If we find additional issues during the stripdown that weren't visible externally, we contact you before proceeding — never after.
The rebuild is warranted for 12 months parts and labour from the date the engine is returned. The warranty covers defects in the rebuild work — it's a proper warranty, not a get-out-of-jail document.
- Fixed price issued before work commences
- 12-month parts & labour warranty on rebuild
- No surprises — changes agreed before proceeding
Heritage & Classic Engine Rebuild
We carry out rebuild work on heritage diesel engines — Lister, Gardner, Lister-Petter, and other legacy commercial and marine diesels — where the original engine must be maintained. Heritage engine rebuild requires specialist knowledge of older tolerances and machining practices; our team has the experience and, in most cases, the parts supply to complete this work correctly.
Rebuild vs Replacement — Which Makes Sense?
The right choice depends on the engine, the asset, and the cost comparison.
| Approach | Best When | Lead Time | Cost Indicator | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-Situ Repair | Specific fault identified | 1–5 days | Lowest | 12 months on repair work |
| Engine Rebuild | Engine worth retaining | 1–3 weeks | Mid-range | 12 months parts & labour |
| Replacement Recon | Faster turnaround needed | 2–5 days | Mid-range | 12 months parts & labour |
| New Engine | OEM warranty or compliance required | Variable | Highest | OEM manufacturer warranty |
*We'll advise which approach is right for your engine and application — we don't have an incentive to recommend the most expensive option.

We sent a Gardner 6LXB for a full rebuild — it's in a classic narrowboat that the owner wasn't prepared to repower. Commercial Engines did the work properly, sourced the hard-to-find parts, and returned it running better than it had in years. The quote was fixed and the delivery date was met.
